My grandmother was born in Akhaltsikhe, Georgia. I learned a few years ago that the name of this city means "new castle" or Neuchâtel. What a coincidence: My grandmother lived in Akhaltsikhe, then in Batumi before immigrating with her family to Tehran, Iran. I was born in Tehran. After living in Paris and Los Angeles, I landed in Neuchâtel, Switzerland. Our journeys are inversed. She went from "Neuchâtel" to Tehran and me: from Tehran to Neuchâtel! Since this discovery I have been thinking of my “paralel life” with my grandmother and this gives me the urge to find out more about her and her family.

Centres, hors les murs…

Ma grande mère était née à Akhaltsikhé, en Géorgie. J’ai appris, il y a quelques années, que le nom decette ville signifie “new castle” ou Neuchâtel. Quelle coïncidence : Ma grande mère a vécue à Akhaltsikhé, ensuite à Batoumi avant d’immigrer avec sa famille à Téhéran. Je suis née à Téhéran. Après avoir vécu à Paris et à Los Angeles, j’ai atterri à Neuchâtel. Nos trajets sont inverses. Elle est allée de “Neuchâtel” à Téhéran et moi : de Téhéran à Neuchâtel !

Le thème Extra-muros m’a donné envie de travailler sur les notions de l’intérieur et de l’extérieur, parrapport aux endroits qui partagent le même nom : New Castle ou Neuchâtel, châteaux forts, murs,intérieurs, extérieurs. Une ville est intra-muros pour ses habitants, mais extra-muros pour les autres.Newcastle en Angleterre est extra-muros pour Newcastle en Australie. Tout est subjectif.

L’installation de 16 dessins sur les plans des villes fait hommage à la coalition de ces villes. Neuchâtel,Akhaltsikhé et les 14 autres villes de cette coalition ont trouvé un sens pour moi ; donc j’ai mis mes marques sur leurs cartes. J’ai dessiné.
